Event Details

Go Compose! is an exciting opportunity for young people to compose their own pieces of music, which will be rehearsed, performed and recorded by brilliant professional musicians, all in one day!

Young people attending the Go Compose! day will be tutored by two expert specialist composition teachers – David A. Stowell, award-winning composer of music for Film and TV and Alison Cox OBE, Head of Composition at the Purcell School for Young Musicians.

Date: Sunday 18 March, 9.30am – 6 pm
Venue: The Belfry Centre for Music and Arts, 23A Cromer Road, Overstrand, NR27 0NT
Cost: Participants will be asked to pay just £10 for lunch and refreshments during the day. Otherwise, the project is entirely free of charge!

At the beginning of the day, young composers will be given compositional starting points. The professional musicians will demonstrate their instruments (clarinet, cello, piano, and baritone) and then help the young composers experiment with material for them, using any combination of the instruments. From there they will be encouraged to pull together their sketches and ideas and begin to compose their pieces, with the help of tutors and players, using both staff and graphic notation.

In the afternoon, the pieces will be run through and discussed briefly by the players, as a kind of workshop-style dress rehearsal, followed by an informal concert for parents and friends.
