The use of percussive instruments at primary level music education is important to the development of pupils knowledge and understanding of key musical elements pulse and rhythm. As supported by the Model Music Curriculum published by the DfE in March 2021, performing rhythms accurately and being able to play in time to a pulse are fundamental building blocks in developing a child’s musicianship.
In this session we will explore what to do with the various percussion instruments found in primary school classrooms, building teacher confidence and supporting teachers to introduce percussion instruments to KS1 and KS2 learning. You’ll leave with practical ways of exploring the musical elements with pupils at primary school age.
This session is suitable for all teachers of primary school children, including teaching assistants, trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers. No musical experience necessary!
