Snappy Operas is a new nationwide project by Mahogany Opera Group to create new short operas with young people aged 7-11 that’s heading to Great Yarmouth this March.

This term young people from across Norfolk are working with professional musicians to bring to life five new ten-minute long operas: learning words and music, creating props and costumes. Discover what they’ve made in an energetic evening of music and theatre, when the children will perform Snappy Operas for the first time.

The operas have been written by some of the UK’s most exciting composers and writers, including Errollyn Wallen, Emily Hall, Toby Litt and Ian McMillan, working together with groups of young people in Cornwall, Cumbria, Norfolk, North Tyneside and Suffolk. They are a collection of lively stories set to a variety of musical styles with elements of jazz, folk and classical.

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, real life experiences and ideas from the children themselves, the performance will feature colourful characters including unicorns, dodos, sheep, hens and even headlice!

Come and see what these local young opera-makers have been up to.

Snappy Operas is a Mahogany Opera Group production in partnership with Norfolk Music Service, generously supported by Michael Tippett Musical Foundation and PRS for Music Foundation (Talent Development Partnership) and the Norfolk Music Hub.
